As flags fly in special commemoration and fireworks boom in the streets this week, many people across the nation – including Black newspaper publishers – will not only reflect on the freedoms that have been gained since the July 4, 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence – but also on the promises that are yet unfulfilled.
“We’ve always been a day late and a dollar short in terms of how we relate to how this country has treated us,” says Denise Rolark Barnes, publisher of the Washington Informer, reflecting on a question posed by the NNPA News Service. “It’s a good family time, but we really haven’t – I don’t think necessarily bought into the celebration."
In the speech, known as “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” the editor/publisher of the North Star answered himself: “But such is not the state of the case. I say it with a sad sense of the disparity between us. I am not included within the pale of glorious anniversary! Your high independence only reveals the immeasurable distance between us. The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice, are not enjoyed in common.”

San
The 38th annual San Francisco Pride Parade drew larger-than-usual crowds Sunday as revelers turned out to celebrate the legalization of gay marriage.
Mayor Gavin Newsom, a longtime gay marriage supporter, drew raucous applause during his speech at the Civic Center Sunday morning.
"Obviously the spirit and pride of this parade is a little more acute and intense than in previous years and obviously it's a great time to celebrate with people from around the world," said Newsom.
The parade also took on a decidedly more family-friendly tone this year, with Dykes on Bikes and other marchers bringing their children along for the celebration.
Meanwhile, organizations like Marriage Equality USA tried to familiarize voters with the concept of gay marriage. They were handing out literature at their booth in the Civic Center's marriage pavilion during the festivities.
"We're asking folks to speak to local groups, to submit letters to the editor...we've already got about 30 counties where we've got couples who've gotten married," explained Pamela Brown, Policy Director for Marriage Equality USA.
She believes as more people know the stories behind same sex couples who commit, the less likely they are to vote for a marriage ban.
“The customer doesn't expect everything will go right all the time; the big test is what you do when things go wrong.”
Public Apology from the Executive President
Entering the first couple of days in July and just leaving a wonderful gay pride month, I couldn’t stand to leave my dear-hearts in the dark any longer. First let me give an official apology for the inactivity of the website and the missing of week 4 of the newsletter. Building the new site, (getting the funds, making the plans, etc.) have all taken a great deal of time and effort. So much I had ignored the most important thing, you all.
However, A SOLObeatz Production’s blog website will be inactive for a few days after the Independence Day holiday. And will resume promptly on or after July 11th. The newsletter will also fall into the hold on production, going from weekly to bi-monthly. Please forgive our mess and have patience as we work to become bigger and better all for you. Our Dear-hearts!
