Obama ‘08
Change is Coming…
Written by: Jonny B. Mitchell
A SOLObeatz Production

No matter the reason, no matter the stance, no matter who you choose, just remember that change will come. After a long and historic presidential campaign, we have decided to direct our undivided support to Barack Obama to be the next United States President.

Not only will he be the first black president, he is also the best candidate to support and back gay rights. We feel that he will not only bring change to America, but open a lot of doors for bigger freedom to our community; black, white, gay and straight.

So whoever you choose to vote for in 2008, remember that OUR support will be with Mr. Obama. Happy Voting!

Some Maverick, Huh?
When will John McCain stop campaigning against marriage equality?
Written by: Joe Solmonese
Human Rights Campaign

This week, you're probably seeing countless news stories about John McCain's "maverick" record. But did you know...

Two years ago, John McCain campaigned to deny marriage to Arizona GLBT couples.

Now he's publicly supporting the ballot initiative to end marriage equality in California.

And he's even said he wouldn't rule out a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage nationwide.

Some maverick, huh?

While he'd like you to believe he's a moderate, at the end of the day Sen. McCain marches in lockstep with the anti-GLBT right wing.

His public support for writing discrimination into the California constitution – a measure opposed by Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger – puts him among company like Focus on the Family, the Family Research Council, and their bigoted buddies.
He believes same-sex couples should never be allowed to adopt children.

He even appeared in a television ad for the 2006 Arizona ballot measure that would have denied marriage and domestic partnership benefits to all Arizona couples.

And he hasn't even ruled out writing discrimination into the U.S. Constitution with an anti-marriage amendment. At a recent forum at Saddleback Church he said:

"...if a federal court decided that my state of Arizona had to observe what the state of Massachusetts decided, then I would favor a constitutional amendment."

Let's get that straight. In other words, he only supports a Constitutional amendment...if he really wants one? McCain dug himself even deeper when he tried to backtrack a few minutes later:

“We have to recognize the unique status of marriage between man and woman...doesn't mean that [GLBT] people can't enter into legal agreements. That doesn't mean that they don't have the rights of all citizens. I'm not saying that.”

Actually, that's exactly what it means, Senator. If GLBT Americans don't have marriage rights then they don't have "the rights of all citizens" – simple as that.

Don't let Sen. McCain get away with embracing discrimination while telling us he's protecting GLBT rights. Don't let him tell us he's a maverick while supporting hate and bigotry.
Sign the petition and then pass it along to your friends.

Warmly,
Joe Solmonese
President

2008 The Year To Win
There hasn’t been an election like this in decades.
Written By: Joe Solmonese
Human Rights Campaign

We have exactly one opportunity to change the direction of our country, to prevent four more years of anti-GLBT policies, to stop a presidential candidate who's vocally opposed to same-sex couples adopting children and a hateful amendment that could mar our historic victory in California.

So I'm asking you to be one of 2,008 supporters to step up in the next 7 days, before our online membership campaign ends. And to thank you for your gift at this critical time, we'll send you a free magnetic picture frame.

In no recent election has so much been at stake.

This year could be a major step forward for equality, but we must not allow ourselves the seductive complacency of thinking "it'll all work out." We face a presidential candidate who has actively campaigned for a same-sex marriage ban, and who multiple times in recent weeks, said he's against loving GLBT couples being able to adopt.

Meanwhile, voters in Florida, Arizona and California are turning on their radios and TVs and hearing that marriage equality threatens their families. The radical right is spending millions on a barrage of ads. Their claims are patently ridiculous (how could creating a loving family harm anyone?), and we're actively drowning them out – but it takes significant resources. As you know, we're already working tirelessly to stop the anti-marriage amendments in California and other states. But that has stretched our resources, and other efforts need your support.
But if you think your donation doesn't matter, think again. YOU can help drive more victories this year, one by one, with a membership gift in the next 7 days.
Click here to become a member.

Enjoy the rest of your summer, stick that frame on your fridge with a picture of you doing something fun, and let's put an emphatic, victorious exclamation point on the Year to Win!

Warmly,
Joe Solmonese
President

August Man of the Month
You guys voted and the winner for August man of the month is Christopher Maurice Brown.

Brown, one of two children, was born May 5th, 1989 and raised in the small town of Tappahannock, Virginia, the son of Joyce Hawkins and Clinton Brown. Brown was influenced by the artists his parents played on the home radio, such as Michael Jackson, Donny Hathaway, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. A dancer since the age of two, Brown was not aware of his vocal talents until the age of eleven. Before becoming a vocalist, he was interested in becoming a rapper.

At thirteen, Brown was discovered by a local production team who visited his father's gas station searching for new talent. Since then, he began his recording career and moved to New York, staying there for two years. Brown's local production team organized an audition before Def Jam Vice President Tina Davis, who currently works as his manager. At the age of 15, Brown was then sent to perform for L.A. Reid and was subsequently signed in 2004 to Jive Records. By early 2005, Brown began work for his debut album, working with the likes of Scott Storch, The Underdogs, Dre & Vidal, Bryan Michael Cox, Bow Wow, and Jermaine Dupri.

U, SEX & THE TOWN
Written by: Jonny B. Mitchell

A SOLObeatz Production; along with The Black Shell, is presenting its first masterpiece collaboration, “U, Sex & The Town.”

This story revolves around four close friends, three guys and one girl, who deal with everyday issues in life, including their experiences with meeting people from the internet. All of it taking place in Oakland, California ‘The Town.’

Kenny Whitley, Johnson ‘J.R.’ Ross, Teddy Mathis and Tonya Brown bring you the heat. Here’s an excerpt from the first episode:

It’s amazing what you see when you actually open your eyes. What people do when you’re not looking, where a store was when you needed it three days ago, and how close you actually live to a jailhouse. Well, all but the last one is true for me. I have lived in a nice loft in downtown Oakland for a year now and don’t plan on moving no time soon. I am literally close to everything; the stores, the train, the BART, everything. But today, I noticed something new. I had a new neighbor in my building.
The loft across from me was never empty, but I had never seen anyone come or go out of it. That is, until this morning. Oh, I am sorry, where are my manners, Kenneth Whitley is my name. I mean, that is what my mother named me. Even though I hate it, everyone I met loved it. Go figure. People do say I look dead on Columbus Short, but with a bigger ass and much more hair. Naturally curly, of course. Wouldn’t he be jealous? I could’ve been his stunt double when he was dancing all close to Chris Brown in that dance scene. Oh, if the world were mine

Marvin K. White, the epitome of creativity
Written by: D Mos Fabolous One
Writing matters because it is the ultimate contract, one between you and the universe, one between you and “the great writings of life.” You write and you have connected with an ancient urge to record, to preserve, to teach, to pass on a story, a knowledge, a recipe, a way to get help, a way to free, a way to love, to conjure, to pray even.”

These are the words from the talented and the great, Marvin K. White. He has been writing since 1990 and hasn’t lost his touch. His first book, Last Rights, received critical acclaim and was a gathering of voices from the first 10 years. Nothin’ Ugly Fly, his second masterpiece, was a continued exploration of blackness and sexuality as he reflected on his growth as a writer.

His next book, Our Name Be Witness, is the biggest evidence of growth and a huge departure from the first two books. The voice changes dramatically, leaving you wanting more each time you finish a excerpt. Marvin is not only a supporter of A SOLObeatz Production, he is a huge inspiration to our creative nature. July Newsletter 1

Black America: Independence Day!
As flags fly in special commemoration and fireworks boom in the streets this week, many people across the nation – including Black newspaper publishers – will not only reflect on the freedoms that have been gained since the July 4, 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence – but also on the promises that are yet unfulfilled.

“We’ve always been a day late and a dollar short in terms of how we relate to how this country has treated us,” says Denise Rolark Barnes, publisher of the Washington Informer, reflecting on a question posed by the NNPA News Service. “It’s a good family time, but we really haven’t – I don’t think necessarily bought into the celebration."

In the speech, known as “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” the editor/publisher of the North Star answered himself: “But such is not the state of the case. I say it with a sad sense of the disparity between us. I am not included within the pale of glorious anniversary! Your high independence only reveals the immeasurable distance between us. The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice, are not enjoyed in common.”

San Francisco Pride Parade
The 38th annual San Francisco Pride Parade drew larger-than-usual crowds Sunday as revelers turned out to celebrate the legalization of gay marriage.
Mayor Gavin Newsom, a longtime gay marriage supporter, drew raucous applause during his speech at the Civic Center Sunday morning.

"Obviously the spirit and pride of this parade is a little more acute and intense than in previous years and obviously it's a great time to celebrate with people from around the world," said Newsom.

The parade also took on a decidedly more family-friendly tone this year, with Dykes on Bikes and other marchers bringing their children along for the celebration.

Meanwhile, organizations like Marriage Equality USA tried to familiarize voters with the concept of gay marriage. They were handing out literature at their booth in the Civic Center's marriage pavilion during the festivities.

"We're asking folks to speak to local groups, to submit letters to the editor...we've already got about 30 counties where we've got couples who've gotten married," explained Pamela Brown, Policy Director for Marriage Equality USA.

She believes as more people know the stories behind same sex couples who commit, the less likely they are to vote for a marriage ban.

“The customer doesn't expect everything will go right all the time; the big test is what you do when things go wrong.”

Public Apology from the Executive President
Entering the first couple of days in July and just leaving a wonderful gay pride month, I couldn’t stand to leave my dear-hearts in the dark any longer. First let me give an official apology for the inactivity of the website and the missing of week 4 of the newsletter. Building the new site, (getting the funds, making the plans, etc.) have all taken a great deal of time and effort. So much I had ignored the most important thing, you all.

However, A SOLObeatz Production’s blog website will be inactive for a few days after the Independence Day holiday. And will resume promptly on or after July 11th. The newsletter will also fall into the hold on production, going from weekly to bi-monthly. Please forgive our mess and have patience as we work to become bigger and better all for you. Our Dear-hearts!

June Newsletter 3 (no pics)

Spirituality and Religion.
There are many things to be said about spirituality. Does it coincide with religion? Does it make one more intellectual? Whatever your questions about the two are, I am here to try to help you understand. Spirituality is the sense and ability to enjoy spirit in every form and fashion. Whereas religion is a community business based on one aspect of Spirituality. Christianity is a religion, Judaism is a religion, and Wicca is a religion, just to name some examples. But Spirituality is so much more than just one religion. It’s the relationship you have with your higher being. It’s the positive energy you attract from the universe and repel it back.

So whatever you chose to believe in and respect. Just know that unless you are hurting someone or something with your beliefs, you can never be wrong. Just because you don’t believe in Muhammad or Jesus doesn’t mean you going to burn for eternity. Happy days will follow you if you propel your mind in a state of victory. Never give up and always ask your deity for strength and knowledge. And don’t forget to thank! Would you like doing for someone who didn’t thank you?

Here is an affirmation you can use to start your day:
I am on top, in touch and in tune with my life. I like who I am and am glad to be me. I feel great and am in control of my time and myself. And every day and in every way I get a little better.”

ISoLoveLondon has published a very interesting and enlightening video post on what your option is on this very sensitive subject. Comment and be real, dear-hearts.

    June Newsletter 1

    June 5th, 2008

Opening of the first ASP website…On May 22nd, A SOLObeatz Production dropped the idea of trying to start a video web show [like everyone else] and did the next best thing, started a blog site. With the help of Blogger.com, A SOLObeatz Production blog site was created. The creator, MosDefJB: D Mos FABOLOUS 1, has posted over 19 blogs in the month of May and that number will increase in June. Most of the blogs were emotional gateways of the emotional breakup, now they are aimed at today’s issues in the gay community.

Several posts will be YouTube videos that affect the thoughts of ASP at the moment. These videos will require viewing and will have only a caption explaining the video. The aim of this website is to promote the production and its supporters, affiliates, fans and other popular bloggers. ASP hopes you enjoy the blogs, comment on them and be patient as we work out the bugs to bring you the web show…one day.

    THANK YOU!!
Robert Jones, Jr. for turning A SOLObeatz Production on to blogger.com. If it wasn’t for you, we would be fifty steps behind times on Myspace with our thumbs up our ass.

    About the newsletter….
In the newsletter, there will be updates on supporter’s websites, shows, and of course, ASP. One important project a month will be the “Man of the Month.” For the next month coming, there will be a list of men to be selected. The one with the highest votes will be the winner.
    For the man of July:
    • Bokeem Woodbine

    • Laz Alonzo

    • Will Smith

Submit your choice by voting on the side bar of this page. Thanks
    .

    Happy Birthday!!
  • June 18th- Jennifer Bowles

  • June 7th- Darth Sidious
  • June 12th- Frank Caldwell

  • Congrats!
  • Robert Jones, Jr. for his graduation from college. You go boy!

  • “Do your best at whatever it is you can do today, and you’ll have further progress tomorrow.”

    Fiveblackguys…
If you ain’t part of this, you should be. This program is featuring two of MosDefJB’s supporters. ISoLoveLondon and Nvncyble. Check it out and enjoy the Fine Black guys…oops, I meant, Five Black Guys.

    Road Trip!!!
Nvncyble is on the road going homo-coastal, I mean bi-coastal. ASP wishes him a safe journey and happy adventures.

    OBAMA 08 & Gay Marriage~
2008 is a FABOLOUS year thus far. Barack Obama has beaten Hilary Clinton in the running to become the next president. We give our hats off to you and a standing ovation. Also, California has DENIED the hold on the legalization for gay marriage till the next vote. How exciting is that? Now gay couples can set the date as early as today!

    Any Suggestions?
If you have any suggestions on what should be featured, you would like a shout out, or would like your new show posted, let us know. We would be happy to promote our family members.
